I’ve had the TV for about a year and a half or more. The DVD player never worked from day one, so I’m not judging by that, I have an Up-Converter with HDMI anyways. But the TV is great. Picture quality is great, shows in 1080i (I have the 32 in), has HDMI input, and HD component cable input. My beefs with it are that it will randomly switch between mono and stereo sound, and I have yet a way to figure out how to make it stop. After about 9 months, you could here a small crackle in the sound every once in a while. And now, there is a dead/dying pixel. But honestly, for the price I paid for a 32 in HDTV…. phenomenal.
ps. The Start up takes a long time..

I purchased an Akai LCD from Radio Shack, within 3 months the picture would black out - obviously some component overheating. Sent it in for repair under warranty. Two months later, they sent me back a totally different set with scratches all over the case. The remote was a Phillips universal that they had painted black over the name! The set is too large for a specific area that I purchased the original one for.
I emailed Akai 4 times and get only a generic response that says:
“Thank you for your inquiry. Your email will be answered as soon as possible.
If you want to order parts, please call 888-498-7278.
If you want to speak to a representative (customer service, tech support, or to request service), please call 866-278-5900.
Again, thank you for your business.”
I contacted customer service and explained what had happened and told them that I wanted my original set back. They said they couldn’t do anything about it, they would have to contact Akai to see what they could do. It’s been over a week and I have not heard from Akai.
Do yourselves a favor and don’t buy their garbage products backed up by NO customer service whatsoever!

I was really happy with this purchase until about 4 months ago when it started taking longer and longer to turn on and required me to attempt to turn it on multiple times. Now, it’s out of warranty and I’m pretty sure not worth paying to get fixed, so I’m down 500$, have to purchase a new television and not impressed at all.

We received the Akai 27 inch LCD TV, refurbished and paid $679.00. It was delivered defective with a loud buzzing noise. The product is not refundable & there is no “LIVE” person to speak with from Amazon. We were informed that we had to go through Akai for repair. We have made dozens of phone calls-It has been three weeks and no one has come to repair the TV- Never buy a refurbished TV and never purchase an Akai product. They make promises, will not let us talk to a supervisor or corporate headquarters. Awful!!

I am cheap and have been holding out for just the right deal. I find it difficult to justify 500.00 to 1,000.00 for a 27″ LCD TV. The result is that I have been watching the same tube 19″ tv in my bedroom for 15 years!
I found this on line as a reman for 369.00 at (…).
The sound is ok. Two speakers under the screen, not dolby 7.1, but ok for the bed room. The picture is great! I also love having a built in DVD player.
Are there better? I am sure there are, however at this price I could not find any. I have read in other user reviews that there is a static sound that comes up. I have found this occationally on the lower analog channels of comcast cable. I unplug the cable box and tv, plug them back in and the problem goes away. It seems to be channel specific. I had comcast out, however they can’t find anything wrong. If I just unplug the tv, the problem stays. I do not think this is a tv problem.
I recomend this tv if:
1-You do not mind factory reconditioned
2-You want a combo tv/dvd
3-You are cheap and refuse to pay the inflated prices.

Now that I’ve owned it for 1 1/2 years I can give a meaningful review, especially since I’ve bought two other LCD TVs during that time and have something to make comparisons.
Now I’m using it in my study as a monitor for my laptop, and sometimes still watch TV or play a DVD. It works great as a computer monitor: bright, accurate display.
The 3:2 pulldown feature is very handy when you have it connected to an up-converting DVD player and it’s playing progressive-scan mode.
It has never given us a problem as a HD display for our DVDs and has enough controls to adjust and tweak it to look perfect. Seriously, it looks as good as our newer Samsung 47-inch 1080P LCD TV.
The blacks are perfectly black and the whites are bright white; too bright on some of the picture choices. The 550 brightness rating is higher than seen on most LCD tvs.
Never have heard any buzzing sounds, even when connected to our very sensitive home-theatre system. Obviously it sounds MUCH better when connected to external sound system, especially using the digital co-axial outputs.
The only complaint after 18 months of constant use is that the remote is pretty cheezy. The menus however are easy to use and intuitive.
If all my future hi-def TVs turn out to be as problem-free and thoroughly enjoyable, I’ll feel very fortunate.
(note: I did not buy this as a refurb; many of the other opinions posted here are based on them buying a refurb unit. You’re only buying someone else’s reject, in my opinion)

Well the 42″ Plasma was great until 11 months later the picture went out and we only have sound. I have been in contact with AKAI for warranty work and have been very dissatisfied. I contacted them on the day it occurred and as of today, a month later, I still have a broken Television sitting in my living room with no plan of action. I was told by two different customer service representatives that if a service center could not be found in 14 business days that I would be issued an RMA# and would be able to exchange it where I purchased it. I called again last night (because no one has called, emailed, or any other form of communication) and was told that it was 30 business days? Even though I have been pleased with the TV prior to it going out, I can’t with good conscience recommend AKAI to others looking to purchase electronics. I place great value in knowing that the company I purchase from has the integrity to stand by their product and will make things right when their product fails. Akai has little value in this department thus far.

I bought this TV from Price Club about 2 years ago and I still love it! The Picture is brighter and clearer than most LCD TV’s I have seen to date, I also own a 47″ LG 1080P LCD TV, and honestly this TV looks better for most material.
I have had no reliability issues with this TV whatsoever, it has performed flawlessly for over 2 years now, and I abuse it daily with Blu Ray movies and Xbox 360 games… excellent TV ~

I bought this HDTV monitor over a year ago and I have been very happy with the quality. Never saw any problem yet and the price was great. The remote is bit too low-key but for the price its not bad.
Compared to other HDTV monitors i guess this is a bit heavy so i prefer to keep it on a table compared to mounting on the wall.

Simlar to other reviews. My set starting loosing color after about 10 months. It took a month to get an authorized service center, another month for them to tell me it wasn’t repairable now we are in Monthy 7 and still trying to get a commitment to getting a replacement TV shipped to me. These guys are crooks. Don’t buy anything no matter with their logo on it no matter how great it might look.

The audio on my AKAI tv stopped working after one year. I have tried to contact AKAI customer service to resolve the problem, still waiting for a reply. IT has been over 2 months. I will NEVER buy from AKAI again. DO NOT BUY!!!!

I bought an akai lcd tv about a year ago, it had a year warranty on it. The picture went out on it 2 days before the warranty went out. my wife e-mailed them, because that was the only way we knew how to get ahold of them, they never replied. My wife called the website where we bought the tv and got a number to call, when she called Akai(junk) they told her that the warranty was over. All though she explained that we have been trying to get ahold of them before the warranty went out, they still told her it had expired. If you buy this brand of tv your asking for trouble. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BRAND OF TV’S TO ANYBODY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! DO NOT BUY THIS BRAND!!!!!!!!!!Spend a little more money and get a GOOD tv. There customer service(if thats what you want to call it) is the worst i’ve ever seen. ****B-E-W-A-R-E-**** DO NOT BUY

It has a nice colors and great image. Sound is not impressive. It has only 1 HDMI input, although the 1 S-Video, 2 component and VGA inputs are adequate. PC display works fine, but its highest resolution is only 1024×768. The remote control is really bad: it cannot control multiple devices and switching between TV modes is slow and sequential. It lacks of an auto-voltage regulator, which you should buy separately. After 6 months of minimal use I had go to repair it. In summary, the display is good but there are better options.
